‘Alaska Grown’ Logo Belongs to the State
The “Alaska Grown” logo is important in the state’s agricultural industry. This circular logo design features the map of Alaska in color green, a blue background color surrounding the map and the color yellow on the text and border.
Created by Alaska Division of Agriculture, it is intended to increase consumer awareness and consumption of Alaska agricultural products. Today, more than 300 producers, retailers and wholesalers are using the logo as one of their key selling points.
More than anything else, this is a seal of quality. Those companies who want to use this must pass established grade standards. Moreover, food products must be 100% locally grown while 75% of the content of processed products must be produced in Alaska.
Now, the licensing rights of the logo is under dispute. The conflict between the state and Alaska Farm Bureau started in 2004 because the latter has sought exclusive rights for over 20 years to use Alaska Grown on promotional apparels. However, the state claims to own the trademark and that the Division of Agriculture already spent thousands of dollars to promote this design.
A few days ago, a news article reported that the Anchorage Superior Court favored the state as the rightful owner of Alaska Grown logo.
