The Anglian home logo design is a simple iconic logo that depicts an English knight mounted on an armoured horse, holding a shield and wielding a lance. The horse has its legs raised giving the logo perspective and energy.

I like this logo because of the simplicity, the negative and positive space usage to create the details of the horse and the knight with out using too many lines and the well balanced font. It is a pity though that except for the logo, the old “anglian” theme is used no where else in terms of brand extensions. A quick look at their website reveals that Anglian decided not to show any more themes graphics. I think with such a great name and the hint at the old English solidness, more of the theme should be used in the branding to create greater impact.

I like this logo because of the simplicity, striking icon of the panda and the simple font. The cute panda mascot gives the company a very soft and friendly look and feel. This is very important in the pharmaceutical field since companies are perceived to be quite stuffy and impersonal. However, I can not help but feel that the logo reminds me of a charity or animal welfare society. This is because the logo so closely resembles the WWF Panda logo.

The Anaheim Piranhas sports logo design is a simple iconic logo that depicts a piranha aggressively eating it’s way through the word Piranhas. There is bits and pieces of the name floating around and a couple of action lines give some movement to the logo. The piranha itself is quite toothy in a simple way and yet very aggressive.

I like this logo because of the simplicity and the line art of the fishing logo icon, even though I must say I am not too sure of the colors.

I think the logo is too simple and abstract. Especially since the organization is membership based, the plastic surgeons logo does not do much to inspire any confidence or meaning. I would perhaps have expected a line art of a face or some such icon to relate directly to the plastic surgeons.

I like this logo because of the simplicity of the nice elegant rose icon. The website branding is also quite simple with an easy to use navigation and even simpler way of selecting cards and sending them off. The online greeting card industry has mushroomed in the last few years. But you can see the trend slowing down as people are no as keen to send egreetings any more. Or so it would seem.

Older than the Modern Olympics by about 45 years, The America’s Cup is the most prestigious regatta and match race in the sport of sailing. The regatta race is between two yachts – the winner of the Challenger Series (a race to select the challenger) and the current cup holder. If the challenger wins the cup then it is transferred defender’s yacht club to the winning team’s yacht club.

The America’s sports logo design is a simple iconic logo that shows the silhouette of the America’s Cup cut out of the background of two sails. The negative and positive space usage is quite nice and the icon of the cup itself is quite stunning.

I would have perhaps preferred a bit more traditional font used for the name America’s Cup. The silhouette of the cup also looks like an Arabic decanter. There is a diamond shaped bit on the top of the cup which is a different color. The significance of the color eludes me. Here is an image of the America’s Cup.

The Amblin media logo design is a simple iconic logo that shows the silhouette of E.T. riding in the basket on Elliot’s bicycle flying in front of the moon from the movie, E.T.

I like this logo because of the iconic image of E.T riding a bicycle in front of the moon. I watched the movie as a kid and that image has been etched in my brain. To this day, when I see Amblin’s logo, it brings back memories of my child hood, the movies we used to watch (especially Back To The Future which I had probably watched over 200 times) and my friends with whom I have lost touch but do think of them once in a while.

Montreal is synonymous with football. The first part in North American soil took place on the cricket pitches of downtown October 10, 1868. Four years later, the Football Club of Montreal and was created in 1946, the Alouettes were founded. The composition of the team reached the brilliant idea of the businessman Leo Dandurand Montreal, who convinced Lew Heyman becoming the first head coach of the team.

The Montreal Alouettes won a Cup Gray in 1949 and played in three finals from 1954 to 1956. The joys of the team are then evaporated and the team failed to post a winning record before 1970, the first of three years where Sam Etcheverry has been at the helm of the team. In 2002, the Alouettes finished the regular season with a record of 13-5 and then crushed the Toronto Argonauts and Edmonton Eskimos in the playoffs to win the fifth Gray Cup franchise. The ingredients for success were assembled. The Alouettes are again the best team in the CFL in the field and in the community.

The Alouettes sports logo design is a complex mascot design of an “alouette”- a skylark, a small type of bird rushing forward with a football in one wing enclosed by a circle and the team name Montreal Alouettes surrounding the design. I really like this design. The mascot character has been drawn out nicely and the colors are quite cool too.

When creating sport logos, especially if they mascot design samples, this kind of bold style with a bold character, bold border and bold font treatment is usually the best route.

The Allmerica financial services logo design is a great iconic logo that has a pyramid incorporating a great icon of an eagle (side profile). Surrounding the icon is a circular swoosh and below the whole design are the words Allmerican Financial.

I like this logo a lot. The icon is quite nice. This logo was designed by BrandEquity, a Massachusetts based visual marketing and brand communications firm. They have created a lot of popular brands including Bank of Boston, Kodak, Levi’s, Volunteers of America and more. All their brands dating back to the 1960′s are quite iconic and timeless. For example, the icon they created for Colonial in 1966 looks as if it were designer yesterday. Another great example if the logo for Goodwill Industries which shows a lego like iconic face which looks so contemporary. Or what about the iconic logo of the Boston Five Bank of a silhouette of a bison.

The Allianz insurance logo design is a simple text based logo that shows the company name along with wit a very subtle icon – a circle with three vertical lines. The vertical lines in the circle are not of the same height with the middle one being taller than the other two and haas a slight serif on the top.

I am not sure what to make of this logo. The icon does not tell me any thing about what the company is about. Granted, insurance can be an abstract field and can not be directly represented in graphic form with out looking cheesy. However, I did try and search for a plausible explanation of what the icon might be. I read some where that the original Allianz logo had a coat of arms and an large eagle with three smaller eagles in the middle. These were later updated to be 3 simple lines. When I read that and looked at the design the three lines did seem like an abstract eagle.

Of course, they are lucky to have a cool name like Alien Skin for their company so they could build on the alien theme. Located in Raleigh, North Carolina, Alien Skin produces the Eye Candy series of Photoshop plugins for graphic designers and tools like Exposure and Swap Art for photographers.

The AKS manufacturing logo design is a simple iconic logo that shows an abstract image of ship’s frontal view made up of only two shapes forming half the ship. The mind’s eye fills the other half giving the impression of a ship. This is quite clever and I quite like the idea behind the design.

On the website, you can see the logo has been updated to have a golden gradient effect to simulate a 3D logo design look. The website is quite terrible but I quite liked the various boats and amphibious vehicles that AKS manufactures.

I like this logo not only for the nice design but also because it represents some thing from which I have personally benefited. I travel a lot and have earned quite a lot of AIR MILES that I had redeemed for a number of gadgets and gifts. I like the neat iconic image of the airplane, quite classic and reminiscent of the poster artwork of the 40s and 50s. The nice blue logo color complements the design and the industry quite well. The emblem logo style is quite flexible and the company has used various versions of the emblem for various marketing purposes.

The frog is on inline roller skates and wields a hockey bat in one hand while the other hand is clenched into a fist. The frog character’s face is twisted into an aggressive scowl. The frog character is quite muscular and the overall logo has an aggressive attitude.

I like this mascot character logo. The illustration is quite nice and the attitude and message is conveyed quite well. I also like the way it has been used on the hockey banners, hockey stadium, the player outfits etc.

Aggregate Industries also has a UK construction office helping home builders and property builders. The font used for the word “Aggregate Industries” is quite a professional and straight faced one. There is nothing much to read into the font selection though.

You feel anticipation – as if some thing is about to happen.

I really like this funding management logo. However, I would have preferred the tiger line art be updated to be cleaner. The tiger illustration shows a little more stripes that I would have liked. Also, in the typical retro style, the lines making the outline of the animal are not continuous but rather broken at intervals.

I am always intrigued by logo design that represent entrepreneur related associations or magazines etc.

The AGEFICE business logo design is a simple iconic logo shows the letter “G” that ends in an arrow pointing up. The “G” rests on a blue square and bits of it stick out.

I have tried to imagine what the letter “G” would stand for and what the arrow might mean. Of course there are the obvious attributes that come to mind when you look at an arrow integrated into a logo – forward movement, dynamic ascent, greatness, strength etc. But what about the letter “G”. Even in French the association name does not begin with “G”. Also, I realized that the association works with entrepreneurs and ensuring compliance with laws on vocational training, manages the contributions paid by entrepreneurs through URSSAF, determines the criteria for financial support for expenses related to conducting training activities, processes funding requests from it’s members and promote training as a tool for business development.

None of these activities could be represented through this rather weak looking icon. It actually looks like it was created back in the 80′s and was never updated. In fact the letter “G” looks frighteningly similar to the dreaded Papyrus font.

The logo color used to be orange but has now been changed to maroon. With the tagline “You Agricultural Company”, AGCO has been servicing the agricultural industry since 1990.

I really do not like this logo since it does not relate to agriculture or agriculture equipment. Neither the logo color, the shape of the icon or the font treatment do justice to the brand. The road or paths that were draw diagonally do indicate progress does not really indicate progress. It would have been better for a travel or transport logo. A pyramid or triangular icon would better suit a finance logo design.

The Aeromexico airlines logo design is a simple iconic logo that depicts a side profile of a Mayan/Azetec face with full hear gear and an eagle’s face on top. The design looks like one of these tribal leaders that don animal heads as head gear.

I love this logo. The icon is awesome and ties into the ancient history that Mexico and the rest of Latin America is proud of. The simple silhouette of the human face and the eagle face is quite powerful and elegant.

I would have perhaps preferred a better branding on the plane itself. Some thing like the Virgin Airlines perhaps. But then the advantage that Virgin has is the bold red color.

AeroMexico has 650 daily flights to 84 destinations on 4 continents, with a global fleet of 128 airplanes.

It is robust, simple and best of all easy to brand on the various security equipment such as the bell box on the outside of homes that we see, the CCTV cameras and more. For a security company, I would have preferred to see the ADT logo updated to some thing more in tune with the time – such as using a shield etc to hint at security and protection. We created the City Wide Security Company logo using a modern Web 2.0 logo style of a shield. I looked at other residential security company logos such as GE Security, SVAT, Dakota Alert, DSC Honeywell, Visonic, Optext, Rokonet, Linear Security, ELK, Winland Electronics, X10, ADEMCO, USP and Altronix and realized that most of them had ordinary logo designs. Nothing really jumped out at me.

The Adobe office printing logo design is a simple iconic logo that depicts a half gear or cog and a couple of swooshes with in the cog. Below the icon are the words Adobe PrintGear. The icon is in magenta color and then lettering in black.

This logo has also been updated by Adobe along with it’s new branding of Adobe and related products such as Adobe Illustrator CS4 etc. Amazingly, even though I had seen it some time back, I could not actually find it any where on the Adobe website or on Google images. Perhaps I was mistaken but I do find it I will update this post with the updated PrintGear logo design.

Nicolas Pozio started Adiva Corporation back in 1996 to implement the concept of combining the agility of the scooter with the safety and comfort of the car – a patented design that has a fold-able roof and introduced the first such hybrid vehicle in 2000 under the Benelli brand in Milan, Italy. Later Renault also branded and sold a restyled version.

Adiva scooter motorcycles are sleek and stylish to look at and appear to be comfortable and safe to ride. You can see a lot of them in cities like Rome and Milan in Italy and also in Singapore. More and more cities are adopting this new hybrid vehicle for the obvious benefits.

The Adiva motor logo design is a simple illustrative logo of a hybrid vehicle – the scooter motorcycle shown in a clean brush stroke. The design shows the shape of the hybrid vehicle that Adiva has developed and also distinguishes via color the patented fold-able roof. Below the graphic image is the name Advia in a modern and smooth kind of font.

I like this motorcycle logo design immensely. The illustrative icon is awesome. However, I am not too thrilled with the font for the company. Some how the icon and the company seem to be disconnected and do not integrate well together. It looks almost as if the company name was pasted below the icon as an after thought. I believe the choice of the font and the color was to give the logo and then brand a kind of modern and sleek look.

Adiva Corporation updated it’s logo recently to a more 3D style logo design with chrome effect and much more abstract logo icon. The new logo design shows an abstract scooter shape with emphasis on a hidden “A” in the icon. It does not however, look like the hybrid vehicle.

The chrome and 3D effect is nice and as an emblem on the vehicles looks cool. I do not actually see the company name attached to the new logo. Not on their website and but I did see the name on the vehicles. It could be a branding strategy like Apple logo, who does not actually use the word Apple in it’s logo design.

The Adept Information Technology logo design is a simple font based logo that has the letters adept in small case. Each of the letters cuts into the next creating a kind of architectural/engineering/blue print kind of look and feel.

Adept Technology Company is active in a variety of industries requiring high speed, precision part handling including food handling, consumer product and electronics, packaging, medical and lab automation, automotive, as well as emerging markets like solar manufacturing. So the logo design is quite fitting in the sense of the manufacturing logo feel to it. The cool blue color of the technology company logo design also adds to the effect and over all I found the logo to be quit effective. It is simple yet powerful.

Adept Technology Inc., recently updated their logo design by removing the various cutting lines between the letters making the logo even simpler. The logo color seems to be the same though. They have also come into the Web 2.0 Logo Design style by casting a reflection below the logo on their website. Since the company deals in robotics, I would have thought that the previous logo design would have been a better option. But I am sure a huge technology company such as Adept knows what they are doing in terms of their company branding.

The Advertising Council media logo design is a simple text based logo that has the word Ad surrounded by a dark square and the word Council below it. This logo to me reminds me of the typical logo designs that you would see public organizations used to sport back in the 50s and 60s.

I must say that the logo design looks quite contemporary even to this day. Even though the company was originally put together to encouraged the purchase of war bonds and conservation of war materials, the early identity had none of the markings that war related organizations had from the 40s. The font is quite legible, professional and yet soft and inviting. The dark square surrounding the word Ad could be considered as a print media representation. I have seen several other public service announcement company logos, such as Strauss Radio, MediaLink, TV Access, Double R Productions, Electronic Retailing Association, MediaTracks Communications, Syndication Networks Corporation and zComm, indicate that PSA companies usually go for subdued and quite simple font treatment based logo designs.

The logo color is a kind of teal color which is also used generously through out the Ad Council website.

Distributing a public service announcement professionally achieves national TV or radio air time at a small fraction of the cost of purchasing equivalent air time. Public service announcement distribution remains one of the most cost-effective means of placing a message on the air.

Adanaspor is the football team in Adana, one of the biggest cities in Turkey. The football club was founded in 1954 and the first colors were navy and yellow. The football club converted their football logo colors to orange and white in 1966. Orange representing citrus and white representing cotton for which Adana was quite famous for. The club has played in several national league matches and had a very strong position back in the 80s. They are now placed 8th in the Bank Asya First League in 2008-2009 season.

The Adanaspor soccer logo is a simple illustrative logo that combines shows an icon of a cotton bud enclosed by a shield. On the top of the shield icon is the name “Adanaspor” and the words 1954/1964 etc and the Turkish city name Adana. It is a little different from the various sports logos that we have created in the past for our customers.

The cotton bud represents the cotton produce that Adana is famous for. The football logo colors which are also the team colors are Orange and White with a hint of black for the base of the cotton bud. I like this logo because of the simplicity, the warm colors and the simple icon in the middle. It could have been updated over the years to give it a little more punch.

Starting with it’s first recorded guide in 1957, a tour of Hyde Park narrated by Eleanor Roosevelt, Acoustiguide’s current products are solid state and include keypads to allow visitors to choose content appropriate to their current location in the exhibit as well as additional material as well as multimedia and video units.

The Acoustiguide logo design is a line art based logo depicting a human face formed by brush strokes seemly written by a child. The human face is surrounded by a box to perhaps represent art in museums and three rays come out at the back perhaps to signify their product – audio guides.

I am not sure I like this logo much. To start with, the child like brush strokes really do not gel well with a company such as Acoustiguide. It is a world leader in cutting edge technology targeted at Museums and public displays. They had revolutionized how guided tours would be implemented by breaking through the linear tour format. They implemented this at the Louvre Museum, Paris, which I had visited recently and I found it to be quite impressive.

I like this logo because of the simplicity, the warm color and the integration of the Nike core logo.

Acer Incorporated, originally called MultiTech was founded by Stan Shih in 1976. Starting out as a electronics component seller, Acer because a PC manufacturer and with the purchase of Texas Instruments’ mobile PC (laptop) division in 1997 entered the laptop market.

Acer then tied up with Ferrari and started promoting a premium line of laptops under the Ferrari brand in the US. By 2008, it has surpassed HP and DELL in terms of number of laptops shipped and became a world leader.

For a company with such an aggressive marketing and expansion philosophy, the logo (the old one and the new one) is quite subdued and pale. It is just a font treatment with all small letters and the “e” slightly thinner than the other letters. The font seems to be a customized version of ERAS (bold) font.

The reason Acer might have gone for a simple font treatment, like most other computer manufacturers logos, is for ease of branding on the hardware. The current logo color, which is green, is not too appealing either.

The ACDSee software logo design is an iconic logo with a symbol of an “eye” and a simple font treatment. It is unusual to see such a clip art style logo for such a long standing and popular logo software company. The eye might have been created uniquely for ACD company but it does look like a clip art image. The font selected for the company name is not too exciting either.

The ACDSee logo updated to the more web 2.0 logo style that many of the software companies are using these days. The new logo sports the same eye but in a more abstract manner. The small letters in the company name signify a modern approach. The change from the florecent green to a more modern orange is a smart choice.

The Accenture technology logo design is a simple text based logo with just a hint of design in the form of the angled bracket on the letter “t”. The angled bracket signifies forward movement into the future, a philosophy advocated by the company. The small letters in the company signify the openness and friendliness of the company. It shows the company is approachable and accessible.

The company name was chosen from a list of possible thousands for the company Andersen Consulting after an independent arbitrator’s August ruling in favor of Andersen Consulting in its arbitration with Andersen Worldwide and Arthur Andersen. Under the terms of the ruling, Andersen Consulting was excused from any further obligations to Andersen Worldwide and Arthur Andersen, including any obligation to make termination payments, and given until December 31, 2000 to adopt a new name.

I like the logo. It is extremely simple but quite memorable.

ABN Amro Bank is a consortium of Royal Bank of Scotland, the Government of Netherlands and the Bank of Santander and was established in 1991. The iconic logo was created by Landor Associates and is made up of the words ABN (Algemene Bank Nederland) and AMRO (Amsterdam-Rotterdam Bank). The ABN Amro Logo icon is quite simple and resembles a shield with a triangle seemingly cut away.

To be honest, I am not really impressed with this logo. The logo colors used – turquoise and yellow for the icon and gray for the text look rally subdued. Granted they were different from the others in the banking sector at the time, but I can not help think that brighter colors perhaps would have created a better icon.

The shield, if it indeed is a shield, perhaps signifies strength – 3 huge entities coming together and offering security and safety to their customers. I am not sure what the broken away piece of the shield signifies. Perhaps it is a like pie chart and the yellow but is a piece of the pie.

The ABC (American Broadcasting Company) company logo is quite a simple iconic logo design. The ABC logo, being a media logo, still retains it’s simple font treatment enclosed by a circle back from 1979. ABC went through various phases of logo design starting in 1943 right up to the 3D ABC HD logo that it sports on it’s website now. The first logo used by ABC Television Network was made up of the image of a microphone flanked on both sides by the letters T and V and the letters ABC vertically aligned with in the icon of the microphone.

Then in 1962, the now familiar fonts treatment and enclosed in a large “a” was created by the legendary logo designer, Paul Rand. This later became even more simplified and the letters were used in a black circle.

I think the logo has worked well for ABC over the years. The choice of using a Bauhaus family font back in the 60s, a font that can easily duplicated, was a smart one – especially before the era of computer graphics. In 2007 ABC created a 3D version of the logo.

One of my favorites, the A&W is a chain of fast food restaurants in the United States. The A&W logo that you see above has remained pretty much unchanged since 1922 when the original owner Roy Allen took on one of his employees, Frank Wright, from the original Lodi store, as his partner. They used the first letters of their surames to form the first A&W root beer.

Here is a color version of the A&W logo:

The logo itself is quite simple with an oval shape enclosing the letters A&W. The oval shape indicates a cross section of a cut root. The two semi circular discs inside the oval shape in two different colors signify the partnership aspect of Allen and Wright. As with the 1950s themed restaurants and the sponsored classic car cruises, the font used in the A&W logo is quite classic and old fashioned.

I like the imperfect nature of the cross section of the root. The outside oval is perfect but the 2 irregular discs inside make it appear to be hand drawn.

A&S logo represents the Allied Stores Corporation identity. It was formed in 1930s and in 1988 it merged with Federated Department Stores after filing for a Chapter 11 bankruptcy.

Yet another uninspiring department store logo design. The two letters of the company name’s acronym joined by a rather weak looking ampersand that seems to be lost in the big A. When scaled down the ampersand looks lost.

The A&P Appledore Group, now known as Appledore International Ltd, is a company that provides a wide range of services aimed at improving the competitive position of ship builders and ship repairers around the world.

The Appledore International logo looks quite interesting. The shape signifies an inverted ship hull that is being repaired. It is a direct reflection of the kind of services the company provides to the marine industry. The two halves of the icon that also forms a huge A perhaps are meant to form the letters A and D. The color choice is very poor though. There is no connection to the sea or marine. Also the absence of a company name makes the Appledore logo look weak.

It is interesting to note that the company does not display it’s logo on it’s corporate website. Check out Appledor International website.

Another logo that does not tell us anything about the company. The A&p logo you see above is ade up of 3 overlapping round cornered rectangles. On the top most rectangle you see the letters A&p.

A&P refers to the The Great Atlantic and Pacific Tea Company which is a supermarket chain in the United States and Canada.
The company was founded in 1859 as The Great American Tea Company and was later renamed in 1870 as The Great Atlantic and Pacific Tea Company. It was once of the leading stores in the USA in the 1930s with over 16,000 stores nationwide. Now it operates around 500 stores only.

Take a look at the A&p logo in the 1990s:

The mark lacks any of the usual elements that we see in the big retail chain stores of the USA. The font used is quite soft and rounded. The icon is also pretty vague and could be mistaken for a production company or a travel company.

A very simple logo that used straight forward font letters and the icon of a trumpet. Because it says video at the bottom of the design we assume it has some thing to do with video but the trumpet sort of confuses the purpose of this company logo.

The A&M Video logo is quite confusing and leaves you wondering if the company deals with video or audio.

The only plausible explanation would be that this company deals with music videos.

The A&M Commercial Art Arlt & Malberg logo looks a little like the old AT&T logo. The blue sphere with the white hotdog lines really resemble the AT&T logo.

The font choice also does not inspire much confidence in the logo or the company. Even with the tag line below the logo, the A&M logo does not tell us what it is that they do.

The Anderson/Able Research Group logo design is quite an elegant logotype. It is entirely font based and in black and white. The A&a logo uses two thick Arial Black font based A’s and a very elegant script based ampersand to connect them together.

Again the logo itself is separated from the company by two lines signifying the two important parts of the Anderson/Able Research Group. They also use a sub-logo or icon below the main logo to create some sort of a balance.

Among some of the critically acclaimed logos in the whole world, the Canon logo occupies a place of distinction. Be it the vibrant red color or the unusual C with its inverted edge all the elements of a Canon logo speaks up of cool efficiency and state of the art features.

The origin of today’s world famous brand Canon can be traced in Precision Optical Instruments Laboratory that was established back in 1933. The first set of cameras was manufactured as a part of business trial and these early birds were named Kwanon after the Buddhist Goddess of Mercy. Now this Goddess was the possessor of thousand arms and spitted flames.

The first Canon logo was created by following the imagery of this Goddess with thousand arms and flames. So how did it come to acquire today’s smart and cool look? Let’s go through the evolution of Canon logo.

From the very beginning, the company worked with an ambition of reaching out to the outer world and as such the company wanted to adopt a name that will be acceptable globally. With this intention, the company name was changed from Kwanon to Canon and it was registered as the logo trademark name of the company in the year 1935.

The name canon has its own significance. In a sense canon means the setting of standard and the company became successful in becoming an industry leader and their products became the yardstick for judging the quality of the others’ products. Thus the naming and the company logo became accurate for a business entity that is engaged in the manufacturing of precision machineries.

It also reflected the company’s vision of becoming the standard in their field of products. Thus from the very beginning, the Canon logo bore the company’s global perspectives.

Starting from 1947, when the Precision Optical Instruments Laboratory became Canon Camera Co., Inc., several versions of the logo were used. It was ultimately in 1953 that a unified version was created. There were a few changes and modifications before the final refinement took place in 1955. Then onward, the Canon logo remained unchanged for nearly half a century.

Today, the Canon logo makes one of the most recognized brands around the globe. With its unique C with a twist inward, the Canon logo was too modern for its time. The unique typeface used in this logo existed nowhere in Europe or North America. Today, the camera giant boasts of world’s one of the distinguished name ad logo that rightly reflect the company’s global ambitions and superior production standard.

Just think of a chubby penguin and try to relate it to any relevant product. A software company is sure to come last in your mind while trying to associate it with a particular company or business. Yet the Linux logo—depicting a fatty penguin—is one of the most recognizable logos of all time.

When the Linux insiders came into a common consensus that it was high time for this software company to generate a unique logo of their own, many suggested different animal’s names—strong, huge and intelligent creatures. But nobody could actually think up that a penguin is the creature that could possibly represent this booming software company! Starting from hawks and eagles, even to jackals to shark.every possible fierce species were considered.

But it was Linus Torvalds—the Linux boss—who ultimately vetoed for a cute and chubby penguin to be the visual envoy of Linux Company. However, he was against the idea of a “macho” type of penguin. The penguin of his dream was essentially cuddly and one that seemed to draw great satisfaction from making a feast on gallons of raw herrings.

How the penguin came to be known as Tux is a different story altogether, but Tux saw the light as a result of artistic endeavors of Larry Ewing who gave it the shape using GIMP (The GNU Image Manipulation Program), an illustration program that comes with many GNU/Linux distributions.

No substantial money was spent on the logo designing companies to develop this penguin logo. Yet, everybody has been given the full freedom of modifying the Tux logo, only with due mention of GIMP.

Thus the Linux logo becomes an excellent proof of concept of the whole rationale behind open source and free software development,” —-as observed by Marco Pastore, an open source programmer.

If the motto of open source software is to give the software fraternity the freedom of any modifications with the software, the open use of Linux logo is also inspired by the same idea experiment and innovation for the purpose of creating something even more amazing.

Now coming to the most important question: what makes Tux stand out?
Torvalds wanted something unusual and different and that he got in this overweight “Tux” the penguin. Going by the standard logo designing norms, a soft design approach is generally unacceptable for a software development company.

On the contrary the penguin logo of Linux was softness and cuteness personified—-a symbol that excites the kids and makes the adults smile. It is after all this unusual association that makes it one of the most widely recognized logos on earth and that compete with equal ilan with the other grammatically accurate hi-tech logos like IBM or Microsoft.

Today, the logo is the central point of any company’s branding policy. A logo makes the business appear credible and professional. Marketing has become so crucial and logos being the focal point of marketing campaigns, all the companies strive for generating the most eye-catching logo to garner their customer’s attention. The logo has become the trump card in the hands of the businessmen to build up the distinct brand.

This craze for branding and logo centric marketing is however a new phenomena. There are certain world famous brands that started using distinct logos years after their brands already earned huge customer recognition. In today’s marketing scenario it may sound ridiculous but the brands like Rolex or Levi’s earned their logos years after the first introduction of the product in the market. The red tab of Levi’s, which even the kids can recognize today, came into being 63 years after Levi blue jeans was officially patented.

The advent of Levi’s logo

In the mid 19th century, the gold mining industry was roaring with prospects in Western parts of American continent. The common consumer products were in significantly short supply. People did not even have pants that would last through the hassles of industry life. This inspired Levi Strauss, a young German settler to start manufacturing of workpants that are as tough and rugged as canvas.

He joined hands with Nevada tailor David Jacobs and together they took the patent of putting rivets in pants for strength. This marked the arrival of “blue jeans”.

Initially it was the two horse design that used as the trademark of Levi’s jeans. The famous red tab was introduced in 1936—the idea was to earn recognition even from distance. And Levi’s logo has been proved one of the most result oriented logos of all time. With the changes in marketing style and branding system, the logo remained a constant feature throughout the phases of all ups and downs.

However, with branding scenario fast changing, the logos are also used in different distribution systems and diverse communications channels. Like other international brands, in this new millennium, Levi’s also has to keep in mind the foreign markets while using their logos in marketing campaigns in other countries. How it began

The Lacoste line of polo shirts made its debut long back in 1933. It was the brainchild of Andri Gillier—-the owner and chairman of the largest hosiery company of contemporary France. He conceived the plan of mass producing a line of shirt bearing a unique logo embroidered in the chest. Inspiration for the logo design came from the embroidered emblem that used to be displayed in the shirts of legendary tennis player Reni Lacoste.

Thus the first line of Lecoste shirts was inspired by the tennis shirts that the player designed for his personal use on the tennis courts.

The shirts made with French cotton pique were white in color with the right faced green crocodile embroidered in the left chest of the shirt. This uniquely designed shirt revolutionized the tennis fashion and famously replaced the traditional Oxford style tennis shirts with their stiff and starched look.

The Lacoste shirts brought a breeze of fresh air in the tennis fashion circuit and added a new chapter in the sportswear designing.

The story behind the Lacoste logo

The legendary tennis player Rene Lacoste was lovingly called the “crocodile” by his fans for his superhuman kind of tenacity that could only be compared to that of a crocodile that never seems to let its prey go. The media further publicized the name after Lecoste made a bet with French Davis cup captain on a crocodile skin suitcase which he was supposed to win followed by a victory in a crucial match.

As a result of huge popularity of this nick name, Lacoste’s friend Robert George drew exclusively for him a design of a crocodile that started to appear on his blazer that he wore on the tennis courts.
