Thanks for some great tips, I'm forever trying to educate my ecommerce clients on this so I'm going to send them this link, I especially agree with organzing important messages into boxes, its much less cluttered and on reading this I'm now convinced I need to retune my own home page!
Thanks again

Very well said.I too recently had to "abandon" the shopping cart due to hidden shipping charges. The offer was to buy three set of artificial jewellery at Rs 199 where as the actual cost with shipping charges was Rs399.
I would have bought the products if they had mentioned the actual cost at the very first step.

Hi,
What a pun! I wonder why businesses are removing images from their old logos!! This is the third or fourth of your articles on redesigning the logos and in each of them the image in the old logo has been removed in the new one!!! Could you write an article exclusively on this point, please?

Thank you for your response.

I can understand that situation, but as for me 90% of my work is watermarked with either my URL or my logo, just for situations such as this. If you made the effort to at least label the author 'Unknown' on the mysterious work, it would appear that there was an attempt made to credit the designer. I think that would certainly head the logo design blogging community in a better direction.

Thanks again,

Leighton

I second Leighton here.

When you manage a logo design blog where it's obviously all about logo design, there's no obvious reason not to mention the credits where it's due. If you feel like being part of such a community, or to serve an audience with content of interest, you should always pay attention to this, without exceptions.

In this context, not mentioning credits along with the logos featured on your site just feels a little bit deceiving.

Hi Leighton,

Thank you for your comment. While we would love to post a credit link to the respective designer, it is not always possible to find out who the actual designer is. These logos are found through normal Google searches.

When designers contact us about it, we do approve credits via the comment section.

Thanks,
Mash

Thanks for including my logo for Maverick's Custom Trousers in the collection here.

I think it would be appropriate in the future if you were to include a designer's credit or a link with each logo sample. Otherwise, visitors might get the wrong idea where these designs were created.

I appreciate it.

Thanks for the Trackur mention!

Great post, knowing what is being said about your company is key in online success. Thanking people for positive mentions and correcting any problems or issues that arise quickly show customers that what they have to say is important to your business. Knowing that they're being heard and something is being done to correct a situation helps turn an unhappy customer into a loyal one!

Wonderful tips for monitoring one's brand online. I'd also suggest that when working the blog circuit you take some time to be an active participant by visiting blogs and commenting. That's what community is all about.

Thanks for including us in your post. Most appreciated!

The Moscow 1980 logo also suggests the lanes of a track, with t&f being the signature event of the Games. Also, the top of the logo evokes the medal stand.

I read once that the LA '84 logo (which I love) was designed before the organizing committee that put on the games was in place. Given a second chance, it might have been much different.

Hi I noticed that there is a difference between your top 10 list and the picture at the top of the post. There is a symbol with a circle and hand as well as a wheel with spokes that are not in the top 10 below. What are these symbols?
Thanks,
Deborah:-)

@Kumar If I'm not mistaken, Dr. Johnson and his assistant colored different groups of bacteria to match the GOOGLE logo and then let them grow. The outline of the letters, now with a nice spot of color under it, are recognizable as the intended logo. Although, instead of being made of ink, the logo is now made of living organisms.

Did I get that right? Very cool!

Hi, a good article as your all other articles are! However, I'd like to know why the new logo does not have the beaver pic in it. I mean a small image of the most industrious and talented animal may be placed somewhere in the logo. Is there a good reason for not including the animal?

"you would never know what the letters say without prior knowledge. Granted, we all know what NASA is and can guess that the hidden letters form this word."

Contradiction :) You either think the reader would or wouldn't be able to guess. Quite interesting but there's not really anything new here, and I'd have rather seen real new/old logos throughout the article rather than what you've done with displaying the BP logo. The BP logo, incidentally, I wouldn't call an ugly logo I think it's very clever.

I handn't realized there was a first and second logo. The only one I am familiar with is the orange, green and purple-combo one (which, from my first viewing of it, I hated). But after seeing all three I'd say the orange is the most solid. The green looks like the logo for a cooking channel (the "O" and the color remind me of an olive...or something) and the multi-colored one just looks sloppy. But you may be right-- perhaps for the sake of continuity and brand-recognition (as if Oprah needs brand-recognition, ha!) she should stick with the most recent design. Either way, it's atrocious.

Perhaps the arrow is a continued path from the R in Porter, thus it creates a larger arrow that is left for the eye to find. Possibly symbolism for looking at the bigger picture or even growth in uncharted areas ahead. Either way great breakdown of this refreshed logo.

So i'm sure that these companies think its just sooo awesome how much press they get for making these terrible logos but what they aren't thinking of is the designers they (purposefully or not) have design the logos. While we may work for hours and hours on an illustration of a tree and have almost no social life, we still have bills to pay and selecting a logo this terrible and then putting our name on it is not only insulting it de-values our craft as a whole. You wouldn't ask Da Vinci to paint something that your 4 year old could do, so please stop putting professionals in the same position.

Hi Mash,
Your article is so inspiring I've visited this site right away! But then the background scenery and the clothing the models wore are contrasting. You see, when you see some out-door background, you expect to see something that is connected to it; for example, the clothes best suited for this background are some kind of safari or casuals or even some tough-looking cotton dresses. And another thing is that the background vegetation is too thick. The clothes are pleasant but the settings are too thick. (You might want to say that's what we usually see in other ads, and this site wants to look different. That's true, but when you want to show a mountain you show a mountain, not an ocean. No?) Though some designs look casual and are cotton, some of them we see here are delicate styles more suited for an evening in a backyard garden or for a sunny day on a golf course. Well... I'm not an expert but that's how I've felt!

Never mind how the logo stands. With or without an attractive logo, health freaks all over the world make a beeline for such "fitness" centres. There are always some 'suckers (sorry takers)' when something is offered! No???? LOL...LOL...LOL...

Thanks for posting about our rebranding efforts. We all love Swaptree and this serves as the foundation for our ongoing business. The new "swap dot" is all purpose as you point out above and will serve our growing community as we go forward. The logo is the first step of a multi-step rebranding effort. This is not a classic example of assuming broader is better. In this day building a mass market consumer brand is expensive. Swap.com represents our category, an action oriented moniker, that will serve our expansion strategy well. Our community is all about "swap"... and that is what our brand is as well! Again, thanks for posting on about Swap.com!

I've been self-employed since 2004, and though it's never been what you'd call "easy," for some reason I feel less like a freak right now, knowing that I'm at least scratching out a living in the worst American economy since the Great Depression. Working for yourself takes long hours, a lot of sacrifices, and unhooking yourself from the consumerist ideology we were all raised on, but I can honestly say I'm happier and less conflicted about my life choices than I ever have been.

Hey Dan,

You are absolutely right! My bad. I did not research this piece enough. The letter M is indeed by Da Vinci. I have edited the above post to reflect this information.

Thank you for pointing it out.

From 3:"The M is cleverly drawn surrounded with lines that appear from a blueprint, adding a touch of Da Vinci to the logo."
I find this statement to be *hilarious.* You obviously don't realize that it was Da Vinci who drew that M. It was originally published in Fra Luca Pacioli's book De Divina Proportione, illustrated by Da Vinci and written around 1497.

Absolutely! Even major online design companies are now converting their sites into logo design contest sites! Perhaps that is where the money is or perhaps that is where the future of this industry is heading to. But for the life of me, I can not understand how it would be a good model, considering the plagiarism and what not - especially for the customers. When I do understand, I might start one myself!! :)

I disagree. While Syfy may be a branding decision that was commercially successful, I'm not sure that it has surpassed the early criticism. More likely, it has simply become less relevant to the critics as a result of the move to a broader audience.

Unfortunately, the channel has never fully embraced what it means to be a "Sci Fi" channel. Examples of this are numerous and varied: Where is Star Trek? How about those terrible Sci Fi originals? How about picking up some of the great Sci Fi shows that major networks dropped? G4 and Cartoon network both have more and better Anime. Has the new "Syfy" brand addressed any of these criticisms from real fans of Sci Fi?

Not really. They mostly just wanted to get out of a market that they were clueless about, and serving poorly.

Really, the Syfy brand itself is an admission of failure. It's the mark of a channel that never really "got" its target market, so it just chose to try to go more mainstream. Successful at finally making money? Sure. But here's an analogy for ya. Imagine if Starbucks had bad coffee. Imagine that people who liked coffee stopped going there, and as a result, Starbucks kept buying cheaper and cheaper coffee, in an attempt to turn a profit. Then, years of mediocrity later, they decided to change their name and sell burgers instead. After a hail of criticism and a strong ad campaign, people came to try their burgers and they started to become profitable. Success usually means that you achieve the goals you set for yourself, not that you moved the goalpost.

Simplicity is key! I'm a fan of simple, clean and functional brand identity design and the thing about simple and minimal brand design is that it's often quite hard to execute well. Remember, perfection is attained not when there's nothing left to add but when there's nothing left to take away.

Although I think that they should have used the company logo that has a unique look and design I think this is a step in the right direction for the brand, I was like others intrigued that it looks strikingly similar to the Bentley logo, which led me to this page, I think this is not going to create any problems for the brand however if it's about creating a new image for the company they should use a universally recognized badge that shows the new image of Hyundai on a global scale, or if they are trying to create a new flagship of luxury vehicles under a new image then it should have a new name as well rather than name it same as the lower priced vehicles.
Just like Toyota did with the Lexus brand, Nissan with Infinity and Honda with Acura, they created a new image and brand name to go along with the new design and created a world class line of vehicles separate of the main corporate brand.

The Expo 67 logo was not a snowflake as indicated above. Designed by Julien Hebert, it was a representation of the unity of all humankind around the world. This can be envisioned by the stylized linking of arms in the logo. It very successfully captured the theme of Expo 67--Man and His World (Terre des Hommes). It was so successful, it was often used without the words "Expo 67" on souvenirs, print ads and the like. In April of 1967, National Geographic ran an article on Montreal. On page one of their feature appeared the word Montreal in large bold letters. The O in Montreal had been replaced with the Expo logo. That said it all. To this day, directional signs in Montreal pointing the way to Parc Jean Drapeau (the Expo Islands) use the Expo logo and an arrow pointing the way--and nothing more. In 2007, to commemorate the 40th anniversary of Expo, a large floral display in front of city hall boasted a beautiful garden planted in the design of the Expo logo with no words, no other explanation. Forty years later, people still knew what it represented. Try that with any of the other logos included above. A logo's purpose is to capture the theme, the spirit of a product or a company with a minimum of text. It becomes the mental image of that product or company. The use of an actual structure seldom makes a successful logo (Met Life's use of their tower in early 20th Century advertising is a notable exception) especially for an exposition when that structure is demolished. A logo (which is fairly recent terminology) has to be simple, clean, clear and it absolutely must convey an idea or theme to the viewer. I love world's fairs but the only two images on this list of logos that are truly successful, are Expo 67's (which most exposition enthusiasts and historians rank as the most successful of all time) and the logo for Chicago's Century of Progress (which went great lengths to capture the ambitions and theme of that great fair). The others are mainly busy representations of fair structures or attempts at logos that lack clear connection to their respective exposition's theme.

On page one of their feature appeared the word Montreal in large bold letters. The O in Montreal had been replaced with the Expo logo. That said it all. To this day, directional signs in Montreal pointing the way to Parc Jean Drapeau (the Expo Islands) use the Expo logo and an arrow pointing the way–and nothing more. In 2007, to commemorate the 40th anniversary of Expo, a large floral display in front of city hall boasted a beautiful garden planted in the design of the Expo logo with no words, no other explanation. Forty years later, people still knew what it represented. Try that with any of the other logos included above. A logo’s purpose is to capture the theme, the spirit of a product or a company with a minimum of text. It becomes the mental image of that product or company. The use of an actual structure seldom makes a successful logo (Met Life’s use of their tower in early 20th Century advertising is a notable exception) especially for an exposition when that structure is demolished. A logo (which is fairly recent terminology) has to be simple, clean, clear and it absolutely must convey an idea or theme to the viewer. I love world’s fairs but the only two images on this list of logos that are truly successful, are Expo 67′s (which most exposition enthusiasts and historians rank as the most successful of all time) and the logo for Chicago’s Century of Progress (which went great lengths to capture the ambitions and theme of that great fair). The others are mainly busy representations of fair structures or attempts at logos that lack clear connection to their respective exposition’s theme.

Yes, the Velvet Underground should have asked a professional to design their logo. Instead they used the banana one, designed for them by Andy Warhol. And since when did Andy Warhol know anything about graphic art or advertising?
