Tim Baldermann, a Republican vying for the Congressional nomination in 11th Congressional District of Illinois, is questioned for inappropriately using the banner logos of leading newspapers in its political flier.

According to Ottawa Daily Times, the flier includes a heading “Here is what others are saying about Tim Baldermann” followed by the logos and excerpts from Chicago Tribune, Southtown Star, Morris Daily Herald, Pantagraph and even its own publication.

However, people behind the Times felt deceived by act. The flier contains the phrase “widespread experience in law enforcement, education and municipal government”. But that is not what the newspaper published exactly. In fact, here’s the complete version of that excerpt:

“Republican leaders Monday lauded his (Baldermann) widespread experience in law enforcement, education and municipal government.”

See the big difference? The Times fears this might mislead its readers that it is endorsing Baldermann for the congressional candidacy. An official statement is issued stating, “The Times was not consulted as to the use of The Times’ masthead and content.”

Of course, Baldermann’s spokesman is quick to defend its position. The mastheads are simply there to show Baldermann is getting press coverage within the district. However, I do not reckon the intelligent public will buy that faulty reasoning.

In business as well as politics, adding logos and testimonials from credible people and groups help boost your image and encourage trial. However, it is your responsibility to present information as factual as possible to avoid any problems in the future.
