Probably the most bizarre incident of this decade took place early this week, when the 23-year-old Cho Seung-Hui went on a killing spree claiming the lives of innocent 32.
Some people shade tears, some people send flowers, some lit candles in the memory of the victims.
NASCAR has chosen a unique mode of paying their homage to the diseased and their families - they have decided to utilize the logo power to protest against this enormous scale of violence and promote consciousness about the misuse of firearms in the hands of such psychological complex cases such as Cho.
NASCAR has announced to display their support to the families of the victims in a unique way; the organization decided to allow race cars to display the Virginia Tech university logo in the cars taking part in the forthcoming races. The university logo will remain on show in their cars for next three weeks in memory of victims of the shootings.
NASCAR couldn’t have chosen a better platform for displaying their sympathy and concern for this tragic incident, for the exhibition of logo will continue in three major racing events. The drivers are requested to display the university logo in the cars both in the Nextel Cup and Busch series at Phoenix International Raceway that are going to take place on Friday and Saturday respectively. In addition to that, the display will continue also in the Talladega Superspeedway (April 28-29) and Richmond International Raceway (May 4-5).
The participants in Craftsman Truck Series event that is going to be held April 28 at Kansas Speedway can also display the logo. It has been decided that logos will be used against a black backdrop to mourn the tragedy. The logo has to be placed on the area just to the right of the driver’s side window net.
It is generally unusual to use the logo of any organization to use for any outside event. But the university authority has been considerate enough to allow this kind of display all in support and respect of humanity. NASCAR expressed their thanks to the University for agreeing with NASCAR for such extra ordinary display. The NASCAR chairman Brian France exclaimed that it was an attempt of the NASCAR in making a simple, but strong, gesture of remembrance.
This decision of NASCAR only affirms the powerful influence of logos in society. They are not only meant to spark off corporate rivalry, they can be used for a variety of good purposes other than help companies making their presence in the market. Indeed, it is going to be a good constructive use of the Virginia Tech university logo.
Thumbs up for NASCAR for crafting such a great idea of paying tribute to thirty two innocent lives
