United States Marshals Service NSOTC Logo – The United States Marshals Service contacted Logo Design Works back in March of 2009 to help create an identity for it’s new unit NSOTC under The Sex Offender Investigations Branch. Logo Design Works created an amazing logo design for NSOTC and proud to have worked with such a distinguished organization.

NSOTC or National Sex Offenders Targeting Center’s mission is to enforce the provisions of the Adam Walsh Act which makes it a Federal crime to fail to register as a convicted sex offender. This division locates and arrests unregistered offenders and brings new federal charges against them.

Federal, state and local law enforcement agencies as well as various members of INTERPOL are the target audience, in addition to other components of the Federal Government.

They work hand in hand with the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children to target the worst offenders and provide intelligence and support to various law enforcement agencies. To reflect this serious mission, NSOTC needed a serious logo that was simple, light weight and still be eye catching.

The Logo Design Team came up with a few different logo concepts right off the bat focusing in the fact that this was a part of the US Marshals Service, a government agency logo. Concepts included icons of shields, eagles and badges. The client liked one direction that had a framing of “National Sex Offender Targeting Center” under NSOTC, combining the idea of a target concept without it looking too much like a bulls eye.

While the client wanted to portray themselves as an entity that targets and tracks down these offenders, they didn’t want it to seem like all they wanted to do is shoot them. They wanted to give the identity a human tough to reflect their humane methods and policies.

After a few revision rounds the client finalized the logo which you can see above.

Whether you personally like it or not, political lobbies are a part of the American political landscape. These organizations must focus intensely on public image, both to rally support and donations and to influence the people who make all the decisions in politics. While we do not endorse or not endorse any of the following organizations, the government logos are undeniably some of the best in the field.

1. National Urban League Logo Design

Everything about this logo design is designed to portray a feeling of equality and inclusiveness. The round shape is the first way this is communicated, followed by the large ‘equal’ sign in the center. The thick lines used in this logo add strength to the message without complicating it. The black and white color scheme is simple enough not to detract from this simple and powerful logo, or its message.

2. GOPAC Logo Design

This logo design seems simple, but it has many details meant to communicate information about the organization’s goals. The shape of the United States is shown in a metallic gold color that connotes wealth, while the blue is calming and positive. The wavy shapes across the nation imply movement in a positive direction, which is a positive image for any political logo design. The writing is simple and unobtrusive, while the tagline below shows the lobby’s main goal.

3. New Democrat Network Logo Design

On the other end of the political spectrum is another group with an attractive and representative logo design, the New Democrat Network. The blue is seen again, which is particularly relevant as it is a color commonly associated with this political party. Sunny, positive yellow is a meaningful accent color. The initials of the organization are shown along with a stylized image of the capitol dome. A yellow circle partially wrapped around the building is a symbol of inclusive while also looking like the sun dawning behind the building. As you can see, even very different organizations incorporate similar themes into their logos.

4. National Taxpayers Union Logo Design

Patriotic red, white, and blue makes an appropriate color palette for an American political organization, a theme that is further communicated by the stars that are key image of the logo design. The stars are aligned in a circle, to give an inclusive feel, but a single star also forms the negative space in the letter U. The thick, strong letters in the acronym are slightly angled for a feeling of movement, while the union’s full name is written below for people not familiar with the abbreviated form.

5. Sierra Club Logo Design

The Sierra Club is not just an earth-oriented charity, but a powerful political group as well. Their logo, however, is distinctly non-political, with a friendly circle enclosing a beautiful wilderness scene. The green color is highly appropriate for a nature oriented logo design. The writing is simple with serifs, similar to that seen in a newspaper, which gives the logo a factual and legitimate feeling that is furthered by the announcement below that the organization was founded more than a century ago.

6. The Constitution Project Logo Design

This organization attempts to portray a legitimate image with a newsy font in a straightforward, relaxing blue that is similar to that used on the American flag. The rectangular shape of the image gives a feeling of honesty and tradition, while the stars communicate patriotism and excellence. The slanted font used for ‘The’ gives a feeling of movement to this otherwise staid logo design, albeit a small one.

7. The Heritage Foundation Logo Design

This organization focuses on reviving traditional values, which is why the well recognized patriotic picture of the Liberty Bell makes such an appropriate icon for this logo design. The famous crack in the bell is missing, suggesting both healing and turning back the clock. The slightly slanted font communicates movement, while the otherwise conventional wording gives the logo an air of tradition. The tagline below gives a clue as to the purpose of this organization. As we have seen in many other logos, the blue color gives a feeling of calm while also tying into the colors of the American flag.

8. AFL-CIO Logo Design

This well known labor organization was formed from two previously competing groups, which is why this logo is so important. Two hands are shown in a friendly clasp, each with the name of one of the former groups. The hands and forearms are strong, clearly belonging to the working class, and each has a different skin tone to show solidarity between people of different ethnic groups. The continent of North America forms the background of the logo design. The circular design gives a friendly feeling, while also giving a platform on which to display the full names of the two organizations that make up this cohesive whole. A blue color is seen again to create a calming image.

9. National Organization for Women (NOW) Logo Design

This classic logo design has become a symbol of the organization’s goals that is recognized all over the world. A circle again gives an inclusive feeling, while the words are oriented to fit neatly inside the shape. Despite the friendly shape, the wording is square and solid with solid underlining, suggesting that this organization has a tougher side. The slightly triangular shape of the O implies strength due to its similarity to mountains and the great pyramids. While this logo is definitely old fashioned, it has certainly withstood the test of time and will likely be a symbol of its cause in America for decades to come.

10. America Coming Together (ACT) Logo Design

While many political organizations use colors and images associated with the American flag, this logo design uses the actual image. Instead of stars, the organization’s acronym is used, while the thickened stripes give a bold image. The people at the bottom of the logo image show the organization’s human interest, while the organization’s full name is written below. The colors, of course, are those of the American flag, giving this logo design and the organization it represents a distinctly patriotic image.

Logos with Global Impact: Ten logos from the United Nations

The United Nations is a global organization that is known to almost everyone on the planet. The UN features many different organizations within its umbrella, all with a different purpose. As we can see from the following ten design logos, these different aims are expressed by different elements in the logo design.

The United Nations logo is the one logo from which most of the following logos are based. The logo is in a calming sea blue, showing the organization’s intention to solve problems and make the world a more peaceful place. The globe is not just an appropriate icon for this international organization, it is also in a round shape that is commonly used in design logos that want for viewers to feel included. The laurel leaves are a symbol of government and education, and show the lofty goals of this well known organization.

The United Nations Children’s Fund, also known as UNICEF, is an organization dedicated to helping children around the world. The logo expresses this well. Like many design logos used by organizations that work with families, the center graphic is of a parent holding their child. The lettering of the agency name is entirely lower case and well-rounded, making it seem friendlier than that used by most UN organizations. The logo is in the familiar United Nations blue with the familiar globe and laurel branches in the background, leaving no confusion as to the sponsor of this organization.

The Human Rights Council of the United Nations is focused on maintaining a standard of human rights around the world. This council shows its ties to the UN by using the globe as the background of their logo. The dove and the olive branch show the peaceful intentions of the council, while the bold red and orange of these shows the urgency and attention that the issue of human rights deserves. Bright, warm colors are often used in design logos to both attract attention and create a sense of immediacy.

As the name suggests, the United Nations Environment Programme focuses on helping countries cooperate to create a healthier, cleaner planet. This logo ties into the UN by using the branches and the light blue color, but instead of a globe intersected with latitude and longitude lines as seen in most United Nations logos, a solid circle is used instead. This closing in of the circle creates more of a sense of cooperation, while the human figure reaching to opposite parts of the circle suggests that this committee has effects on every corner of the globe.

The International Monetary Fund oversees the financial activities of different countries and help track world financial trends. This UN agency is unique because all but a handful of UN countries are members. This universal appeal is expressed by the logo. The two lateral hemispheres of the globe are shown overlapping, with a shield-like shape enclosing them. The shield is the symbol of tradition and history, so it is appropriately used here. Like many design logos for companies that focus on the bottom line, the logo is a stark black and white, a change from the light blue usually used for United Nations organizations.

The World Health Organization focuses on public health issues, coordinating similar national programs and offering assistance where no national public health program exists. As such, its health logo features the familiar United Nations logo with the addition of a caduceus. Because the caduceus is a recognizable and international sign of medicine, this makes the intent of this organization clear.

The World Food Programme is the world’s largest humanitarian organization, focusing solely on maintaining adequate and stable food supplies to areas that have traditionally been without them. The food logo, in a slightly darker version of the recognizable UN blue, features the laurel leaves of the UN logo, along with a hand holding wheat and corn, two of the most important crops in the world. The hand is slightly elongated at the finger tips, forming a swoosh shape that is used by design logos that want to portray a sense of movement.

The United Nations Population Fund focuses on monitoring the population worldwide and offering reproductive care to people around the world. It has a very different logo from the design logos of other UN agencies and organizations, but it is nonetheless a unique and powerful logo. The logo is square in a golden yellow color with orange circles symmetrically arranged. The United Nations logo is small graphic in the center of the logo, while the initials of the organization are featured in one of the orange circles. This logo is modern and has the solidness of the square shape, setting it apart from other UN programs while maintaining its distinct identity as part of the organization.

The office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights is independent of the Human Rights Council, one of the many examples of duplication of duties within the UN. This human rights organization features a different logo from the other human rights organization in the United Nations, in a stark black and white to show the seriousness with which the office views human rights violations. The familiar laurel leaves from the United Nations logo are there, but instead of a globe there is a bold, stylized flame, showing the fire of humanity and the office’s intention to protect it.

The International Labor Organization of the United Nations deals with labor issues around the world, ensuring that workers are treated fairly everywhere. Like a few other United Nations design logos, this one uses a slightly darker version of the classic UN blue. The familiar laurel leaves are used, but in the middle is a cog-like shape made of three pieces. This is easy to relate to the cause of worker’s rights because it is a shape commonly seen in factories. The agency acronym is featured in the middle of this cog with thick letters and newsy serifs.

Citizens as Audience: US Government Agency Logos and What They Are Trying to Say

Few people think of government agencies as being like a corporation, but in fact the two have much in common. While government agencies aren’t directly supported by consumers, they must maintain a positive public image and a sense of brand to keep public and legislative support. These government agency logo are similar in their message to the top 10 USA political party logos. Here are ten very different government agency logos along with what makes them so successful.

Selling a Nation: Political Logos in the United States

Politicians are constantly trying to sell themselves, which is why political logos are so powerful and well-designed. While the United States is generally run by two main parties, there are actually many political parties vying for your vote. Along with the Top 10 Presidential Campaign Logos, here are the ten main parties in the United States and what they are trying to tell you—or sell you—with their logos’ graphic designs.

Like the graphic designs of many parties, the American Democratic Party uses a familiar red, white, and blue color palette to show their patriotism. The commonly recognized donkey symbol is used, but between the red and blue there is a swoosh of white going through the graphic, a shape that connotes movement and flexibility. The donkey is kicking up its back legs, which suggests freedom and even a little rebellion against the established system. It is easy to see this party’s intended image through their use of symbolism.

The American Republic Party also uses red, white, and blue, along with the familiar elephant symbol that has been a figurehead for the party for more than one-hundred years. However, the animal of these graphic designs is shaped into a roughly square shape, showing the authoritative policies of this party. The stars are a symbol not just of the United States, but also of reaching for higher ideals, making this a very appropriate logo for the image that this party is trying to portray.

In the United States, the Libertarian Party prides itself on its focus on social and civil liberties. Because of this, the use of the Statue of Liberty in its graphic designs is very appropriate. The gold and dark blue color scheme is patriotic without being cliché, while the circular shape makes people feel included. The familiar stars are also present.

The American Green Party focuses mainly on efforts to save the planet and reduce the carbon footprint of the United States. Their logo is very reflective of the aim, with a green on green color scheme. A planet is shown blooming within a flower, giving the idea of birth and growth while incorporating the Earth, all common graphic designs used in environmentalism. The font uses serifs and blocky shapes to make this party seem like an authority.

This religiously based conservative party focuses using on the Constitution as the center of all policy and regulations. Because of this traditionalism, it is significant that the Constitution Party uses several longtime American symbols in their logo and other graphic designs, including the bald eagle, the American flag, and stars. The rectangular shape suggests an authoritarian attitude, while a newsy font with serifs gives a bit of gravitas to the image.

The Socialist Party USA is a socially and fiscally liberal group that focuses on civil rights and a socialist economic structure. Their logo is as different from other mainstream political parties as it possibly could be. The recognizable inclusive circular shape of many political graphic designs is used, showing the clasped hands of people from two different ethnicities to show the organization’s goals of social unity and equity. The planet is prominently displayed, but not centered on the United States. It is easy to sense the party’s goals from its logo, making it both effective and accurate as a symbol.

This party is an offshoot of the American Socialist Party, which is no longer running national candidates. However, the party has a very powerful and symbolic logo. The square shape shows through graphic designs that it is more militant than other socialist parties in the United States, while a familiar red, white, and blue color scheme shows a patriotic flair. The symbol of a hand holding a torch is similar to the Statue of Liberty, although it also hails from this party’s assertion that they were ‘passed the torch’ from the now defunct American Socialist Party.

The Modern Whig party professes to be a moderate middle ground between the mainstream Democrats and Republicans. An owl, traditionally the symbol of the Whig Party, is used here. The red, white, and blue color scheme is used once again, but with different meaning. In this case, the bird is half blue (for Democrats) and half red (for Republicans) with a white line and a band of star dividing the two colors. This centrist party believes that our future lies in meeting in the middle, making the placement of the stars in their graphic designs very appropriate.

This gives the impression both of forward movement and ties to the American past through graphic designs, which is the intended message of this party.

As you can see, even politics are affected by logo design, using their logos to communicate information about their history and intentions. While you likely do not agree with the platforms of each and every party on this list, there nonetheless is a lot to be learned from these professional logo designs. Political parties, like small businesses, are selling a product, and thus have become experts in the nonverbal language of graphic design.

Because Barack Obama’s winning campaign slogan was ‘Yes We Can’, it is only appropriate that he have a custom logo design using the most inclusive shape: the circle. This circle is all the more appropriate as it is also the first letter of Obama’s last name. It appears that the stripes leading into the ‘O’ are a road, giving the impression that Obama wants to lead us into his vision of the future. Bush was generally perceived as a smaller, quieter man throughout his tenure as vice president, so he needed a custom logo design for his campaign that would make him seem bold enough to stand on his own. The bold red lines above and below the candidates’ names add more emphasis, while the familiar patriotic color scheme appears to be the golden standard in modern presidential bids.

Reagan was trying to usher in a new era, so brighter versions of the familiar patriotic palette were used. The white background suggests a purity and innocence not normally associated with politicians, furthering Reagan’s assertion that he was different from the average politician. However, a very traditional font with serifs was used to make sure everyone understood that Reagan was essentially a traditional guy. In the end, this rather lackluster custom logo design appealed to a huge majority of the nation.

In 1980, Reagan chose to cultivate a bold, patriotic image with his custom logo design. The block sans-serif lettering stands out against the white background. The flag is sandwiched between the two candidates’ names, lending the rectangle’s traditional, business-like image to this campaign. Reagan wanted to look strong and traditional image that would contrast with his predecessor’s softer, more progressive nature. This was a bold design to go with a bold campaign, but both were successful.

Jimmy Carter was trying to run as a new type of candidate, and the custom logo design for his campaign shows this. Rather than go with bold lettering in a patriotic color scheme, Carter’s campaign used green, a calming, earthy color that was a good choice for this man’s personality. Instead of a graphic, a black and white picture was used. People who voted for Carter did so because they saw him as different from the average politician, an image that his campaign logo reinforced.

Nixon did not have a single custom logo design for his campaign, but the most common stickers and pins supporting his campaign featured the words ‘Nixon Now’ in block letters with no serifs. The familiar red, white, and blue color scheme was used, as was the inclusive circular shape. In all, the impression was that this was a person who was one of us, a patriot. The word ‘now’ made people feel that their help was urgently needed, which probably drove supporters to turn out at the polls in high numbers. Nixon may not have lived up to these high expectations, but there is no doubt that his campaign was a marketing masterpiece.

This campaign was also for Richard Nixon, but it used a very different custom logo design. Instead of the urgent ‘Nixon Now’, the design features a black and white photograph of Nixon along with the words ‘Nixon’s the One’ in red capital letters. It’s possible that this use of a photograph was necessary to get Nixon’s image out in the public eye, as he had not yet been president. The red letters provide a nice contrast to the photo, and likely stood out against the primarily black and white media of the late sixties.

As you can see, there are many similarities between the successful campaign logos of the past thirty years. There is very little variation in color palettes and in the symbols used to inspire the confidence of the American people. However, these similarities make the differences between the men and their messages all the more significant.

The Advertising Council, or Ad Council, is a non-profit organization that distributes public service announcements on behalf of various sponsors, including non-profit organizations and agencies of the United States government. By acting as a coordinator or distributor of the public service adverts, Ad Council does not have to produce them itself. The Ad Council focuses on various social issues by accepting announcement requests from sponsors and distributes the public service announcements to various media outlets.

The Advertising Council media logo design is a simple text based logo that has the word Ad surrounded by a dark square and the word Council below it. This logo to me reminds me of the typical logo designs that you would see public organizations used to sport back in the 50s and 60s.

I must say that the logo design looks quite contemporary even to this day. Even though the company was originally put together to encouraged the purchase of war bonds and conservation of war materials, the early identity had none of the markings that war related organizations had from the 40s. The font is quite legible, professional and yet soft and inviting. The dark square surrounding the word Ad could be considered as a print media representation. I have seen several other public service announcement company logos, such as Strauss Radio, MediaLink, TV Access, Double R Productions, Electronic Retailing Association, MediaTracks Communications, Syndication Networks Corporation and zComm, indicate that PSA companies usually go for subdued and quite simple font treatment based logo designs.

The logo color is a kind of teal color which is also used generously through out the Ad Council website.

Distributing a public service announcement professionally achieves national TV or radio air time at a small fraction of the cost of purchasing equivalent air time. Public service announcement distribution remains one of the most cost-effective means of placing a message on the air.
