Some mascots love to brawl during games while others simply flirt with famous celebrities. Now, another mascot is caught behaving badly but in a different way.
Meet Chip, the cuddly cartoon-like buffalo mascot of the University of Colorado or CU. While this fuzzy mascot is extremely adorable, it was spotted wearing “gangsta-themed” outfit during the “Kid’s Night” promotion in Denver Nuggets basketball game.
According to a news report, 2 university students changed Chip’s traditional CU shirt with baggy pants and white T-shirt. To make matters worse, one eye of Chip has a teardrop tattoo, a modern gangster insignia boasting that the wearer has already killed someone.
The appalled official of CU has issued an apology for this “insensitive, unfortunate and thoughtless” display and vowed to give the appropriate punishment for the 2 students. Currently, there are 3 student volunteers alternating for the role of Chip. Two of those 3 students apparently carried out this stupid act without approval and supervision.
More than the fun they bring during games, mascots are important extension of your brand to help other people identify with your team or business. Since its public image and demeanor automatically implicate your brand, you should manage them in like manner you handle your brands.
