marketside.gifThe country’s biggest retailer, Wal-Mart, has unveiled the new logo for its new small-format grocery stores called “Marketside”. According to Financial Times, the first branch is slated to open this summer in Phoenix, Arizona.

The new grocery logo is rather simple. Since green is the symbol for organic products, it’s no surprise Wal-Mart used this color for the word “marketside” in lower-case. Close to its text is a stack of fresh food items typically available in a grocery store.

Unlike its regular stand-alone supermarket concept occupying 40,000 square feet, Marketside grocery store is reported to be around 20,000 square feet. This is the retailer’s alleged answer to the entry of Fresh & Easy Neighborhood Markets, a discount grocery store owned by UK’s supermarket group Tesco.

Conversely, Wal-Mart has denied these speculations and simply claims this new small-format store is just a variation of its current neighborhood market format. Unlike the broad Wal-Mart stores, Marketside allows the company to explore more opportunities in grocery business and focus on crafting private-label food items.
