University of Akron’s cuddly kangaroo mascot Zippy has won the much-coveted title Capital One Mascot of the Year, after pulling in millions of votes. He defeated 11 other talented and very appealing mascots to bring home the prize of $10,000 to the university.
This annual contest started last September 10, 2007 as a way to honor the unsung heroes of college football. The 12 mascots were chosen based on their pedigree, originality, and interaction with fans. University of Minnesota’s very energetic Goldy Gopher has bagged the second spot.
Other competing mascots are Cosmo Cougar (Brigham Young University), Hairy Dawg (University of Georgia), Cocky (University of South Carolina), Otto (Syracuse University), Joe Bruin (UCLA), Monte (University of Montana), Big Red (Western Kentucky University), HokieBird (Virginia Tech), Cavman (University of Virginia), and Seymour (Univ. of Southern Mississippi).
Zippy is 7-foot kangaroo mascot with prominent tail and pouch. He’s also very popular with his signature moves called tail whip and crowd surf. This animal is used to symbolize the winning qualities of great athletes - speed, agility, power, and relentless determination. Zippy became the official mascot on May 1, 1953.
