Pennsylvania has been known as the Quaker State since 1776 and was also known as the Quaker Province prior to that. The state also had the first state constitution that guaranteed liberty of conscience.
The state’s gross state product ranks sixth in the nation at $430.31 billion. If the state were an independent country it would rank seventeenth in the world behind the Netherlands and behind Belgium. The state is home to ten Fortune 500 companies with Pittsburgh begin home to six of them. The other four companies are located in suburbs. Pittsburgh is home to U.S. Steel, PPG Industries and Heinz.
Pennsylvania ranks third in Christmas tree production and layer chickens. It ranks fourth in nursery and sod, milk corn for silage and horse production. There are many horse racing farms in the state and Pittsburgh’s racetrack was the home of Smarty Jones, the Kentucky Derby Winner. Pennsylvania also draws a large number of tourists as the state is home to the Liberty Bell, Independence Hall, the Franklin Institute, the steps of the Philadelphia Museum of Art, The Poconos and the Delaware Water Gap. The Poconos attract a lot of honeymooners while the Delaware Water Gap attracts fisherman, boaters, hikers and nature lovers.
The Pennsylvania Dutch Region is also a hot tourist spot. The area is home to the Old Order Amish and the Old Order Mennonites. These people frequently reside in Lancaster, York and Harrisburg. Other hot tourist spots include the nation’s first zoo, the Philadelphia Zoo as well as Claws ‘n Paws, Erie Zoo, Pittsburgh Zoo and ZOOAMERICA. The state is also home to the National Aviary.
Pennsylvania has also been called the snack food capital of the world as it leads all other states in potato chips and pretzels. Pretzel producers include The Sturgis Pretzel House, Anderson Bakery Company, Intercourse Pretzel Factory, and Snyder’s of Hanover. Potato chip producers include Utz Quality Foods, Wise Snack Foods, Lay’s Potato Chips and Martin’s Potato Chips. There are also several other foods associated with the state including hoagies, Philly Cheesesteak, Italian Water Ice, the soft pretzel, scrapple, Tastykake, and stromboli.
