Rhode Island is mostly known as the smallest state in the country. Rhode Island, however, was also the first state to declare independence from British Rule, which sparked the beginning of the American Revolution. The state’s name actually refers to the island located in Narragansett Bay, leaving the name somewhat deceiving for visitors. The state is nicknamed “The Ocean State.”

Rhode Island was also the birthplace of the American Industrial Revolution. The state had the first mill in 1790 that was established by Samuel Slater in Pawtucket. The Blackstone River was used to propel the mill. The state was once the leader in textiles, but the Great Depression caused many of these companies to move to the south. The state is now very large in the health service industry and is second in tourism. Tourism supports 39,000 jobs in the state. The state’s industrial outputs include fashion jewelry, fabricated metal products, electric equipment, machinery, shipbuilding, and boat building. The agricultural outputs include nursery stock, vegetables, dairy and eggs.

The culture in Rhode Island is very different and can best be compared to people from Brooklyn. The letter “r” is often dropped and added in words. For example, they say “wata” instead of “water” and “soder” instead of “soda.” The word “wicked” is also used a lot in the language and teenagers can be heard saying, “That’s wicked funny.” Rhode Islanders have also been stereotyped as being extremely superstitious. Many of the people in the 19th century believed in vampires and there are several well-documented stories of people meeting their disinterred deceased relatives. It was also believed that the deceased vampire (they removed and burned their hearts to kill them) was responsible for misfortunes in the family. The most famous case was of Mercy Brown and many believe the story inspired Bram Stoker’s Dracula.

Rhode Island is large coffee drinking state. They have the most coffee and donut shops per capita in the country. They also believe that coffee ice cream is also sold the most in the state. The state’s official drink is coffee milk, which is made by mixing milk with coffee syrup. The syrup was invented in Rhode Island and is sold in most grocery stores there. There are also several other foods unique to Rhode Island including wieners with mustard, meat sauce, onions and celery salt and wieners are often referred to as “gaggers,” “dynamites,” or “weenies.” Submarine sandwiches with ham, prosciutto, capicola, salami and provolone cheese are also popular in the state. The state also has a large seafood industry and they serve clams in a variety of different fashions. Calamari is also popular in many Italian restaurants. The state also has a long-standing tradition with clam chowder that is clear and known as “Rhode Island Clam Chowder.” The clamcake is also popular and is made of a fried ball of dough with clam inside of it. Clamcakes and chowder are generally sold together in the summer months.
