South Dakota is most well known for being the location of Mount Rushmore. The mountain is located near Keystone, South Dakota and is representative of 150 years of history in the U.S. The 60-foot sculptures are of former presidents and include George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Theodore Roosevelt and Abraham Lincoln. The memorial covers over 1200 acres. The project was originally begun to attract tourists to the Black Hills region of South Dakota. The carving began in 1927 and was completed in 1941 with no deaths and only a few injuries.
South Dakota and North Dakota were admitted into the Union on the same day. South Dakota is one of the six states in the Frontier Strip, which also includes North Dakota, Nebraska, Kansas, Oklahoma and Texas. The state consists four major regions including the Drift Prairie, the Dissected Till Plains, the Great Plains, and the Black Hills. The Drift Prairie covers most of the state. The Great Plains cover two-thirds of the state and features rolling hills, plains, canyons and buttes. East of the Black Hills is the South Dakota badlands and are similar to those in North Dakota. The Black Hills are located in the southwestern part of the state and extend into Wyoming. They are rich in minerals such as gold, silver, copper and lead. Harney Peak is located in the Black Hills and is the highest point between the Rocky Mountains and the French Alps. The state attracts more than 70,000 people to hike to the 7,242 summit every year.
South Dakota is also home to the largest naturally heated indoor summing pool in the world. Evans Plunge is heated by natural mineral hot springs. The largest and most complete fossil of T-Rex was uncovered near Faith in 1990. The fossil was named sue and is over ninety-percent complete. The 1990 movie Dances with Wolves was filmed entirely in South Dakota.
