Tennessee has long been known as the “Volunteer State,” a nicknamed that it earned during the War of 1812 when the state had more soldiers volunteer to fight, especially during the Battle of New Orleans.
The highest point in Tennessee is Clingman’s Dome at 6,643 feet. The area lies on Tennessee’s eastern border. Tennessee’s geographical center is located east of Murfreesboro on Old Lascassas Pike and is marked by a roadside monument. There are six features in the area including the Blue Ridge, the Appalachian Ridge and Valley, the Cumberland Plateau, the Highland Rim, the Nashville Basin and the Gulf Coastal Plain.
The Blue Ridge area is on the eastern edge of the state and is home of Clingman’s Dome. The Great Smokey Mountains, the Chilhowee Mountains, the Unicoi Range and the Snowbird Mountains are prominent in the state. The Ridge and Valley region is covered by fertile valleys separated by wooded areas. The Cumberland Plateau is covered with flat-topped mountains separated by sharp valleys. The Nashville Basin features rich and fertile land and has been the home of many tobacco plantations as well as natural wildlife diversity. There are also several national park lands in the area.
There were several major battles fought in Tennessee during the American Civil War. Most of these wars were Union victories although the state was the last to join the confederate army.
There are several important cities in Tennessee. Nashville is considered a major hub in the city for health care, music, publishing, and transportation. The city includes the Country Music Hall of Fame and Ryman Auditorium which is home to the Grand Ole Opry. The most famous honky tonk in the city is Tootsie’s Orchid Lounge which has hosted many big names in the country music world. Nashville is the current capital of Tennessee, although Knoxville, Kingston and Murfreesboro have also served.
Memphis is the largest city in the state and has been the home of many founders of the music industry. Several genres have began in Memphis including Blues, Gospel, Rock n’Roll, and “sharecropper” country music. In the 1950s, Johnny Cash, Elvis Presley, and B.B. Kings were just getting started.
