Utah is a large tourist state. The state hosted the 2002 Winter Olympic games and features cultural attractions including Temple Square, Sundance Film Festival and the Utah Shakespearean Festival are among the most visited.
The state is also known for their Mormon residents. Sixty percent of the state residents are members of The Church of Latter Day Saints. The religion has had a strong hold on many of the states laws and legislature. The state has some of the strictest laws on gambling and alcohol. The Mormon’s are also known for their belief in plural marriages and polygamy. These practices led to many differences between the Mormons and the US government. The 1890 Manifesto banned polygamy in the state after the Utah war.
Utah is one of the corners in the Four Corners states. The state is bordered by Idaho, Wyoming, Colorado and a point of New Mexico as well as Arizona and Nevada. The state consists of a varied terrain which features many mountains that receive 500 inches of snow per year and has many well-known ski resorts. The resorts are made popular by the light, fluffy snow that is perfect for skiing. Western Utah is dessert and has basin and range geology. The Bonneville Salt Flats are very flat. The many lakes including the Great Salt Lake, Utah Lake, Sevier Lake, Rush Lake and Little Salt Lake are remnants of freshwater lakes that once covered the eastern Great Basin.
Utah is a popular tourist destination. The state is very popular for RVers both for the ski resorts and Monument Valley in the Navajo Nation Reservation. Ski resorts include the Flamingo Gorge National Recreation Area, Timpanogos Cave National Monument, Bear Lake, and Jordanelle, Strawberry, East Canyon and Rockport reservoirs. The mountains feature camping, rock-climbing, skiing, snowboarding, and hiking destinations.
Odd features about the state include that the state’s official snack food of Utah and gave rise to the term the Jell-O Belt. Many famous Utahans include the inventor of the electronic television, Phil Farnsworth, John Moses Browning, John Willard Marriott, The Osmonds, Roseanne, Steve Young and Jake Garn.
The state itself has seen many brands to attract tourism and travelers. These include several slogans including “The Greatest Snow on Earth,” “Utah! Where Ideas Connect,” and “Life Elevated.”
