West Virginia is well known as “The Mountain State.” This section of Virginia broke away from the Virginia during the American Civil War. The state is known for its natural beauty including Appalachian Mountain range as well as the Cumberland Plateau and Allegheny Plateau.

The highest point in the state is Spruce Knob at 4,863 feet. The area is covered in boreal forest with dense spruce trees. Because of the mountainous nature of the state has caused the building of several notable tunnels and bridges. The New River Gorge Bridge was world famous as the longest steel arch bridge in the world with a 3,031-foot span. The bridge was also pictured on the West Virginia state quarter. Fayette County also has a “Bridge Day” and the bridge is closed to traffic on that day. The festival includes repelling, BASE jumping and ascending, while bungee jumping was banned due to an accident.

Harper’s Ferry was made famous by the abolitionist John Brown who led an armed group in the capture of the armory in 1859. Brown hoped to be able to arm slaves and lead them to rebellion and overthrow slavery. Brown was hanged and his last words predicted that the civil war was looming and two years those words came true.

The state has widely benefited from the state’s natural resources. Salt has been mined in the state since the 18th century. Coal mining was kept on a personal level for many years until railroad owners began exploring and developing. Soon the Norfolk & Western railroad had developed Roanoke and was heading towards the coal rich land that they explored. Soon after 1881, the railroad began shipping coal. Coal mining has continued into the 21st century and mine safety is still a concern for the state. Coal has not been the only valuable natural resource found, as in 1928 34.48 carat Jones Diamond was found.

The state has a long history but the history of West Virginia is not as varied as Virginia. The state has seen many railroad companies to ship the abundance of natural minerals in the state. Those minerals fueled the Industrial Revolution in the rest of the state and beyond. The mining culture is very strong in West Virginia and businesses in that area will have to work on branding towards that culture. The state colors are gold and blue and the state motto is “Mountaineers Are Always Free.” The state slogan was formally “Open for Business.” West Virginia is open and businesses should develop concise marketing strategies when entering into the West Virginia marketplace.
