New York is a state full of large cities and businesses. The atmosphere is very urban yet also very natural. Farms and mountains dominate a large portion of the state. Most people only associate the state with urban nightlife of New York City.
New York City leads the nation in banking, finance, and communication. New York City is home to the New York Stock Exchange on Wall Street. The total gross state product is $963.5 billion. New York would rank as the sixteenth largest economy if the state were a country.
New York also has a large number of agricultural outputs in dairy, cattle, vegetables, nursery stock, apples, cabbage, potatoes, onions, maple syrup, cherries, plums, pears and peaches. The western part of the state produces sweet corn, peas, carrots, squash, cucumbers, pumpkins, blueberries, hay, wheat, oats, barley and soybeans. There are also 212 wineries in the state. New York also has a moderate fishing economy consisting of clams, lobsters, flounder and squid. The Amish and Mennonite communities produce a large amount of dairy and cheese. There are also commercial beekeepers that migrate through the state. One would never have known that New York was so intensely agricultural.
The state is also home to several major league professional sports teams. Two of the football teams, however, play in New Jersey and they are the New York Giants and Jets. The Buffalo Bills is the only NFL team that actually plays in New York. The New York Knicks and Liberty are the men’s and women’s NBA teams respectively. The New York Mets and the New York Yankees are the major league baseball teams of New York.
New York City is unique as it is separated into several boroughs or neighborhoods. The most popular urban borough is Manhattan. The Bronx is home to the New York Yankees and the birthplace of hip-hop. Brooklyn is the most populated borough and features Coney Island. Queens is the largest borough geographically and the most ethnically diverse. Queens is also home to the New York Mets and the U.S. Open. Staten Island is the most suburban borough. Many of these areas in New York City feature art deco architecture and it has become a feature that the city is known for.
The use of these interesting facts and features will come into play when designing your New York logo and design. Try not to feature only on the city highlights because the natural state of New York has a lot of features and beauty as well.
