The only way to tell if a logo design company is the right one for you is to critique their logo samples. In a logo portfolio, a logo designer will showcase some of their best work. This is a chance for you to see what the designer really has to offer you, including their style and their range of work. You should never settle on a designer before looking at their portfolio and several others. As you are going through this process, ask yourself a few questions.
Do I like this company’s style? Every logo designer has a unique style. This style comes through in every single piece of work that they create. If this style is pleasing to you, you likely have just found the right designer for you. If not, you should look at other portfolios to see what other artists have to offer.
Is every logo in the samples unique? While every designer has their own style, this shouldn’t mean that all of their logos follow a ‘theme’. Images should not be used more than once. A logo is supposed to be a unique representation of your business, and a person who is churning out the same work over and over will not be able to give you what you need. You deserve better.
Do their designs meet my standards? We wish we could pretend that every category out there is a trained professional, but in many cases this is unfortunately not true. When looking at a portfolio, look for obvious errors and places where there clearly was not attention to detail. Keep in mind that this portfolio includes some of the artist’s best work.
Do the logos follow good design principles? You probably are not a logo creator, but you can probably tell is a logo is a little ‘off’. If a design is too ‘busy’, too plain, or simply not right for the subject at hand, you may be dealing with an amateur. Logos should be pleasing to the eye and make you want to know more about the business being represented.
Has the designer created logos in my field? This is not a deal-breaker; after all, a designer who has never created a logo in your field may bring a fresh perspective and new thoughts that result in a unique logo. However, if you can see that the designer has successfully created logos for businesses like yours, you can rest assured that your project will likely be a success as well.
